Warning: TransUnion Sold Confidential Credit Information
July 26th, 2010If you obtained credit anytime between 1987 and 2000, you may be entitled to a cash settlement. TransUnion, a credit reporting company, illegally sold confidential credit information to third party marketers for millions in profit.
TransUnion is one of three credit reporting companies in the United States. It compiles all types of information regarding your credit, such as credit scores, allowable credit limits, revolving balances, duration of credit, etc.
In exchange for millions of dollars, TransUnion sold this private information to credit marketing companies. In turn, these companies began a barrage of marketing campaigns targeting TransUnion customers. These credit offers included harassing telemarketing, as well as tons of unwanted junk mail.
TransUnion violated the Federal Credit Reporting Act by distributing this information for profit. The company recently settled a lawsuit against thousands of consumers for their illegal dissemination of credit information. The terms of the settlement included creation of a $75 million settlement fund, to be used to compensate the victims of their wrongdoing.
If you obtained credit between 1987 and 2000, it’s likely your information was distributed by TransUnion. Therefore, if you received a home loan, auto loan, credit card, gas card, or student loan within this timeframe, you may be entitled to compensation.
