If You Have an Ice Pack Injury

June 24th, 2010

Recently, reports have been circulating about skin injuries and nerve damage as a result of cold therapy devices.  If cold therapy devices are used too long, or at too cold of a temperature, it can result in serious injuries such as nerve damage, chronic pain, or frost bite.  With little or no instruction or warnings, patients may subject the skin and underlying nerves to very cold temperatures for extended periods of time.  Because ice therapy can desensitize the affected area, serious injuries can occur without the patient’s immediate knowledge.

Cold therapy devices can reach freezing temperatures, causing severe injuries such as frost bite and permanent nerve damage.  If injured by an ice pack machine, you should seek immediate medical attention and follow your physician’s instructions.  Even if you’ve suffered minor injuries, obtain a prompt medical examination – in addition to providing proper treatment, this will document the nature and source of your injuries.

At O’Hanlon, McCollum & Demerath, our cold therapy attorneys understand that your injuries may not be your fault.
